City Paper, Big Takeover, iTunes

DC City Paper endorses Sunday's happenings..

There’s something hopeful about Screen Vinyl Image’s noise. For a while, it made Jesus and Mary Chain-style art pop with harsh beats—the group, more or less, was making in D.C. the same stuff a Place to Bury Strangers was making in New York. In 2010 Screen Vinyl Image is a different band: On “New Visions,” the B-side of its new Fan Death Records 7-inch, it revels in distant, observational vocals, harsh-light ambience, and clean, sequenced beats. That doesn’t exactly make it a cousin of the other bands on Fan Death, who lean toward sonic and thematic assault. If you’ve got a problem with the label, let ‘em know: While Screen Vinyl Image plays the Velvet Lounge’s second floor, Fan Death’s Sean Gray will be DJing downstairs.

Oh and this got lost in all the site revisions going on, Big Takeover Review of Interceptors

The intro is all atmosphere, then when the songs start, it’s noise and distortion, melodics, and the depth of some barbed wire kisses crushing out like a perfect mix of a Jesus & Mary Chain Suicide. This is experimental shoegaze goth techno darkwave, distorted into something more, enchanting, hypnotic, and folding noise into melody. It’s a dream soundtrack, a nightmare kiss, with both sides leaving you wanting more. The layers fit, and the broken drums stay solid, staggered against the underwater mystery of the vocals and the sparkled crush of guitar—mellow, but menacing, promising a world of wonder, but holding danger between each note.
